SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:- FOX NEWS (USA) REMOVES FIFTEEN U.S. LOCAL NEWS CHANNELS FROM ROKU UK CHANNEL STORE !!!!!!!!!

$

0

Hi, everyone !!

It came to my attention, while checking my listings for the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store over the weekend, that for some (as yet) unknown reason FOX News has removed most of their U.S. local news channels that could previously be found in the "News & Weather" genre on UK Roku devices. Here is a complete list of the "missing" channels as of the date of this post:-

01. MY FOX LA News
02. MY FOX Detroit News
03. MY FOX NY News
04. MY FOX Atlanta News
05. MY FOX Chicago News
06. MY FOX Philly News
07. MY FOX DFW News
08. MY FOX DC News
09. MY FOX Tampa Bay News
10. MY FOX Orlando News
11. MY FOX Austin News
12. MY FOX Houston News
13. MY 9 New Jersey News
14. MY FOX Phoenix News
15. MY FOX Twin Cities News

Not only does this impact UK Roku users, with an interest in U.S. current affairs, but also those from the USA (and elsewhere) who are in the UK for business (or on vacation) and who may otherwise have been hoping to keep up with the news from back home. Whether this is part of some bigger scheme to (perhaps) bundle all of the FOX local news channels from the USA under one "channel" on Roku, similar to what NewsON has done for other local news on U.S. Roku devices, is unclear at this point. Obviously, I'll let you know if and when I hear anything concrete on the matter but, for now at least, it seems the "freedom of the press" has been curtailed to a lesser or greater extent for followers of U.S. local news from (or visiting) the UK.

Please feel free to leave a comment below, if you have anything to add to this.

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #153

$

Hi, everyone !!

As was the case four weeks ago, there has been another bumper crop of new additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store during the last seven days. More so even than on that occasion, I've been extremely hard-pushed for time today (let's not forget it's Valentines' Day tomorrow) and, with further details for all of the Roku-related news stories from the past week still to follow, I'm going to have to jump straight into the list of new channel additions and then flesh-out those other aspects of this article as and when I get the chance. That said, you can always look back over the info shared via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels since my previous 'Weekly RoundUp was posted and you'll find most (if not all) of the news there.

One thing I will just quickly mention is a LIMITED-TIME OFFER FROM ROKU whereby they are offering Roku users in all regions the opportunity to install a couple of (normally) paid Roku themes at no cost. The opportunity to add these TWO ROKU THEMES to your devices FOR FREE was first made known via my companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels after I spotted an extra theme in the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store (in the shape of a "White Winter Theme" - details below) and then decided to check through the other themes, to see if any of the others were being offered for free. Having discovered that the "Zen  Theme" was also free-of-charge (normally £0.69 when paid for) I decided to share my findings. However, it was a day or so later before Roku published details of the offer via an article - FOUND HERE - on the "Official" Roku blog in which it was also made known that the OFFER ENDS MONDAY 15th FEBRUARY 2016 after which one or both of these themes are likely to require a payment from those wishing to install them. This is only the second time, since introducing the "Themes" genre (i.e. category) to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store, that any of the (otherwise) paid themes have been offered free-of-charge. Previously, it was the "Golf Theme" and the "Letterpress Theme" which received a full discount - for a similarly brief period of time - and it could well be another year before any equivalent offer from Roku comes our way for any of the remaining "paid" themes. So, my advice is to ACT FAST TO AVOID MISSING OUT and get them (while you still can) with an 100% DISCOUNT and expand your options for themed backgrounds on your Roku devices without incurring any additional expense to do so, as would be the norm! ;-)

While we're on the subject of themes... Roku has today (Saturday) added one of their "Featured" or "Seasonal" themes to Roku devices, in honour of "Valentine's Day" tomorrow (Sunday) and, in case you'd like a sneak-peak of it (if you haven't seen it, or missed it) here's a couple of screenshots:-

A WORD TO THE WISE... despite having custom themes permanently enabled on my Roku devices this "Valentine's Day" theme was only installed automatically on my 'Roku 3' devices. Bizarrely, the theme was not applied to my 'Roku 2 XS' models (even though they run the same Roku Software - Version 7.0 Build 9044 - as my 'Roku 3' units) and I had to go into Settings > Themes > My themes then scroll through the list to find & add it to them. Not sure why this was necessary but, if anyone else was expecting to get the theme and didn't, at least there is a "workaround" to install it if needed. Do bear in mind that the option to add this "Valentine's Day" theme will only be short-lived and you can probably expect it to disappear come Monday 15th February. Should you not be in the mood for love this weekend, Mike Duin from Roku has offered some suggestions for five alternative "V-Day" films for UK Roku owners who may choose to avoid the plethora of romantic options available. You will find Mike's recommendations - IN THIS POST - on the "Official" Roku Blog. However you may choose to spend the day... with 2,300+ channels in the Roku UK Channel Store, there's sure to be lots of options for whiling away the hours streaming media to your heart's content! :-)

Meanwhile... getting back to the current 'Weekly RoundUp', not all of the 'Roku Guide' reviews were available at the original time of publishing, either, because more than half of the new channels added to the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store came too late for inclusion in the current batch of reviews. For Roku USA users, you can expect to find the channels from the latter part of this UK list on your devices as well although everyone will have to wait until next week for their corresponding 'Roku Guide' reviews to be published. Once details of those "missing" links have been made known to me, I will (of course) add them to this post, so that you can catch-up on any which caught your interest. Anyway, here's what we have so far:-

WHITE WINTER THEME...................COST: FREE (LIMITED OFFER) [Roku Guide Review]

***FILED UNDER: "THEMES" in the Roku UK Channel Store WHEN FIRST RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That, despite being mentioned in a post on the "Official" Roku blog during the week, this "White Winter Theme" appears to have escaped the notice of 'Roku Guide' and, until they discover this omission and publish one, there is (currently) no active link to an 'Roku Guide' review of this theme. Most likely, this will be rectified over the course of the next week and (once received) I will add the "missing" info to this post. Meanwhile, here's a screenshot from the channel description for this theme taken from the Roku (USA) website:-

HINT: Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

Of course, if you manage to get this theme while it's still being offered free-of-charge by Roku, you can always install it (at no cost to yourself) and discover what it's all about without the need for any third party review to assist you. However... if you're reading this after the fact, and missed the offer, we aim to have a link to the full 'Roku Guide' review for this theme to help you decide whether to purchase it as a fully paid theme. Likewise, we will confirm any pricing details (if applicable) once the offer has ended although it's likely to be a £0.69 (one-off) payment judging by similar Roku themes (i.e. the "Zen Theme", "Golf Theme" and "Letterpress Theme" mentioned previously).

PLEASE NOTE:- That, despite already being available via the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store, this "RZO" channel appears to have also escaped the notice of 'Roku Guide' and, until they discover this omission and publish one, there is (currently) no active link to an 'Roku Guide' review of this channel. As with their review of the "White Winter Theme" (see note above) this will likely be rectified over the next week or so and (once received) I will (again) add the "missing" link to this post as & when it becomes available. Apologies for any inconvenience caused by the absence.

BOLLYWOOD MOVIES.......COST: FREE (With Ads) / PPV (Ad-Free) [Roku Guide Review]

***FILED UNDER: "FILM & TV" in Roku UK Channel Store WHEN FIRST RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That, since this "Bollywood Movies" channel has yet to be added to the line-up available on U.S. Roku devices, there is no active link to a description from the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store (as would be the norm). Instead, the link provided above will redirect you to the official website of "Bollywood Movies" themselves where you can browse their catalogue of free Hindi film and television shows. For those of you wishing to "get social" with the folks behind the "Bollywood Movies" channel on Roku devices, you also have the option to connect with them via their FB page which can be found at:- Bollywood Movies (Facebook). Likewise, there is (currently) no active link to an 'Roku Guide' review for this channel. Should this situation change, then I will add the "missing" link(s) to this post, just as soon as the details have been made known to me. Again, I apologise for any inconvenience caused by their absence in the meantime.

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #154

Hi, everyone !!

For six straight weeks now, we have managed to exceed the average of sixteen new channels per week which was set during 2015. Yes, once again, we have been pretty fortunate to receive a decent crop of new additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store during the preceding seven-day period, as you will soon discover when you get to the list of latest additions included later in this post. However, while the collective efforts of all the Roku channel developers out there continue to deliver new content to Roku owners worldwide, the company behind the devices for which those "channels" (or, "apps", if you prefer) were developed has done little to improve the user-experience for Roku users outside of their native USA. In fact, they seem more intent on making it worse for us...

Those of you who were early adopters of Roku streaming media players here in the UK, as I was, will doubtless remember that in the early days it was possible for UK Roku owners to not only make use of the web channel store on the Roku website but also take advantage of the "Add channel" button featured in each of the channel descriptions thereon. Having the ability to bolster your channel selection online (as well as on your device) came in very handy when you were away from your Roku device(s) but had time to browse online for new content. Whenever you tried to add a channel which was unavailable to UK Roku users, a message was displayed saying that particular channel was "not available in your area" which although (briefly) disappointing still allowed us to add those Roku channels online that were available in the UK. Then, one day, Roku decided to remove the ability to use the "Add channel" button for any Roku users visiting the web channel store from outside the USA with no real explanation offered as to why.

Still, for the better part of the last three years, we have at least been able to access the web channel store on the Roku website for the purpose of viewing the descriptions for all the Roku channels that were featured there. Until that is, at some point in the last couple of weeks, when Roku decided in their infinite (lack of) wisdom to COMPLETELY BLOCK ACCESS to the web channel store. What this means for Roku users outside the USA is that, instead of being able to simply follow a link to the description of a channel (as found beneath most entries in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts), you will be greeted with the following message:-

HINT:- Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

To my mind, this is a ridiculous (and completely unnecessary) move on the part of Roku which will only serve to alienate users of Roku products outside of the USA unless they wise-up and reverse this decision sooner rather than later. For my part... I shall continue to include these links on a weekly basis so that they will be available retrospectively, should Roku change their stance on this, and for those readers who visit my blog from the USA who can still make use of them in the meantime. For the benefit of everyone else, with the exception of any channel screenshots included in the web channel store descriptions, you will find all of the text from the channel descriptions reproduced in the 'Roku Guide' reviews. As usual, I will continue to include links to these (where available) for most (though not all) of the channels featured in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts published on this blog.

On top of being a general pain (in the proverbial) to Roku owners in other "regions" (outside USA) this latest snub has meant a substantial increase in my own workload each week to acquire the images for the channel icons which are included in these posts. Consequently, I have found myself extremely hard-pushed for time (again) today and, with further details for all of the Roku-related news stories from the past week still to follow, I'm going to (once more) have to jump straight into the list of new channel additions and then flesh-out those other aspects of this article as and when I get chance. That said, you can always look back over the info shared via my Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels since my previous 'Weekly RoundUp was posted and you'll find most (if not all) of the news there.

Those who do make the effort will be rewarded with full details (including access codes) for some more "private" channels - i.e. those not found among the "public" offerings that populate the channel store on Roku devices - so, if you happened to miss them before, it's worth looking back through my recent tweets for some Roku treats! ;-) Meanwhile, here's the latest additions to the channel store:-

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #155

Hi, everyone !!

Having made the point in my previous post - from last week - that, for six weeks straight, we had managed to exceed the average of sixteen new channel additions per week (set during 2015) it is (perhaps) of no surprise that we fell just short of that mark during the past seven day period. Even so... there's a handful of new apps within the "Music" genre, including one from internet radio aggregator 'Radionomy' - DETAILS HERE - whose groundbreaking platform offers a wide variety of both music and talk radio and will appeal to those wishing to discover and listen to online stations from all around the world. For those times when you might be away from your Roku device(s) they also have FREE APPS for iOS and Android mobile devices so you can have music wherever you go, without the need for rings on your fingers or bells on your toes! ;-)

Given that 'TuneIn' has always been popular among Roku users, I'm sure this new 'Radionomy' app will be equally well received on the streaming media platform. Those wishing to connect with the folks behind the 'Radionomy' channel can do so easily via their Twitter Feed: @Radionomy as well as their FB page at:- Radionomy (Facebook) which might also be useful for those looking to create their own online stations, as the free global service also provides it's members with free tools for them to distribute, promote and/or monetise their own radio ventures. Who knows... we may even be listening to your radio station on our Roku device(s) at some point in the future?!! :-)

If the selection of new music / radio channels doesn't appeal, then perhaps a change of scenery courtesy of the new "Math Theme" from Roku will get you thinking?! Here's one of the screenshots from the description on the Roku website, so you can see if the numbers add up:-

HINT: Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

Now, we're not saying that this them will help you solve the puzzle of what to watch next on your Roku device(s) and UK Roku owners may have preferred them to use "Maths", rather than "Math" as in the USA, but either way... you'll find links to further details on all of the current crop of new channel additions beneath each of the channel icons shown below.

Speaking of which... as has been the case for the past few weeks, there are some "missing" links to 'Roku Guide' reviews for the channels in the latter part of this list. As usual, these will be added to this post as and when they become available. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that all of the channels are available to Roku owners in the USA (as evidenced by their inclusion in the Roku web channel store) and readers of this blog from the United States can follow the links (provided below) to the Roku channel descriptions until such time as their reviews are published by 'Roku Guide'. Anyway, here is what we have for you so far:-

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #157

Hi, everyone !!

As was the case last week, and (likewise) four weeks ago, there has (once more) been another bumper crop of new additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store during the last seven days. As a result, I have (again) been somewhat hard-pushed for time today and, with further details for all of the Roku-related news stories from the past week still to follow, I'm going to have to jump straight into the list of new channel additions and then flesh-out those other aspects of this article as and when I get the chance. That said, you can always look back over the information shared via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels and you'll find most (if not all) of the Roku news there.

One thing I will just briefly mention is a recent post from the "Official" Roku Stream Blog, which was published on Thursday 10th March 2016 by Melissa Morell. The article pertains to the annual SXSW event and includes details of some special content which can be viewed via the 'SXSW On' channel for Roku devices. As well as interviews and live performances from the interactive, film and music event this weekend, there's a heads-up on what's coming from 16th-19th March at SXSW in Austin (Texas) and, if you're into music, I'd recommend that you read the story - FOUND HERE - and follow the link therein for a full live-streaming schedule which will enable you to tune-in for any of the artists which suit your taste(s) in music. There's one or two other bits of Roku-related news this week, which (as I said before) I will endeavour to squeeze-in when I get chance, so you may want to re-visit this post at a later date for that but, meanwhile... you'll find links to details for the entire current crop of new additions beneath each of the channel icons shown below.

Having said that... as has been the case for the past few weeks, there are some "missing" links to 'Roku Guide' reviews for the channels in the latter part of this list. Hi, everyone !!

As has been the case for the past few weeks, there's been another bumper crop of new additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store during the last seven days. As a result, I have (once again) been somewhat hard-pushed for time today and, with further details for all of the Roku-related news stories from the past week still to follow, I'm going to have to jump straight into the list of new channel additions and then flesh-out those other aspects of this article as and when I get the chance. That said, you can always look back over the information shared via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels and you'll find most (if not all) of the Roku news there.

One thing I will just briefly mention is a recent post from the "Official" Roku Stream Blog, which was published on Thursday 24th March 2016 by Melissa Morell. The article pertains to some of the TOP FREE CHANNELS available for kids and, with the Easter holidays upon us, I'd recommend that you read the story - FOUND HERE - for a list of Roku channels that'll help keep your little ones entertained while they're off school. It should be noted that not all of the channels listed in the article are available to UK Roku users (as several are US-only) but, if you use the built-in Roku "Search" feature, you should find the vast majority can be added and viewed by UK audiences too! :-)

Besides that, there are one or two other bits of Roku-related news this week, which (as I said before) I'll endeavour to squeeze-in when I get chance, so you may want to re-visit this post at a later date for those. Meanwhile... you'll find links to full channel descriptions from the Roku (USA) website as well as  'Roku Guide' reviews with additional details for (almost) the entire current crop of new additions (well, all bar one, to be precise) beneath each of the channel icons shown below:-

PLEASE NOTE:- That, because 'Yoyo Drama' has yet to be added to the channel selection available in the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store, there is (currently) no link to a channel description from the Roku website. Instead, the link provided (above) will redirect you to the Facebook Page for 'Yoyo Drama' on Roku where further information about the channel can be obtained, questions may be asked and any feedback provided for the developers. Likewise, there was (at the time of publishing) no active link to an 'Roku Guide' review of the 'Yoyo Drama' channel. Needless to say, if this situation changes at any time, I will (of course) add the "missing" link(s) to this post... just as soon as the details have been made known to me. Apologies for any inconvenience caused by their absence in the meantime but, hopefully, their FB page will suffice for those who are in need of assistance. That said, given that the 'Yoyo Drama' channel is both free-to-add and free-to-view for UK Roku owners, perhaps the best way to discover what is on offer content-wise would be to add it to your UK Roku device(s) and see for yourself what 'Yoyo Drama' is all about! ;-)

Hi, everyone !!

As has been the case for the past month, we've had yet another bumper crop of new additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store during the last seven days.

In addition to that... there are also "missing" links to 'Roku Guide' reviews for almost half of the channels in this list. The main reason for that is the last ten channels outlined below were actually added to the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store after the publishing deadline for the latest batch of 'Roku Guide' reviews had passed. As usual, these will be added to this post as and when they are posted. Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #161

Hi, everyone !!

For the first time in six weeks, and only the second time since the start of the year, we've fallen short of the weekly average for new additions set during 2015 - which, by the way, equated to no less than sixteen new channels per week across the entire twelve month period - but it seemed somehow fitting given that Roku (themselves) also fell short of the mark this week, in terms of my expectations as a UK Roku user by releasing their new "Power-Packed" Streaming Stick complete with quad-core processor and "private listening" (via Roku mobile app) in the USA as well as in Canada and even to prospective purchasers in Mexico while completely ignoring those in the "other" Roku "regions" of Ireland, France and (perhaps) most surprisingly... the UK!

HINT: Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

Let's not forget that UK Roku purchasers have previously been denied access to the "improved" version of the 'Roku 3' [Model: #4230] with 'Voice Remote' as well as the current flagship 'Roku 4' [Model: #4400] (launched last year to Roku USA buyers) and not forgetting the various incarnations of 'Roku TV' that have been made available in North America over the past couple of years. I mean, U.S. Roku users are now fortunate enough to have '4K' models on the shelves for purchase while those of us in Europe are still waiting on the original 'HD' versions to be released. As of now, it seems the only way UK purchasers will get their hands on anything resembling a 'Roku 4' - other than importing one from the USA - is to wait for the new 'NowTV' box to hit UK shops later this year. Even then, it will (most likely) be subject to the ridiculous restrictions imposed on the Roku channel store which has seen previous devices from 'NowTV' still languishing around the fifty channel mark while the fully-fledged "Official" Roku UK Channel Store has climbed to the lofty heights of having more than 2,500+ channels available to users of every 'Roku' branded streaming media player.

Even when I thought Roku had "tossed us a crumb" upon discovering that, following the above press release from Roku for the new Streaming Stick, there was a subsequent software update rolled-out to all UK Roku devices (see image below) it turned out to be a short-lived moment of joy as Roku were quick to reverse the roll-out once they (presumably) got wind of it's presence on their streaming media players in the UK. Anyway, here's a screenshot I took (at the time the update was applied) to document the change for the benefit of other Roku UK users:-

For those of you who may be interested, Chris Traganos [Twitter Feed: @ctraganos] (Director of Developer Community for Roku) documented the "developer highlights" to be found among the changes implemented for Software Version 7.1.0. - IN THIS POST - from the Roku developer Blog. As an end-user, the most noticeable change(s) were to the "My Feed" section of the Roku main menu and Roku mentioned this (briefly) in their own news article - published in conjunction with the aforementioned press release for the new Streaming Stick - as evidenced by the following (partial) screenshot of the relevant post from the Roku Stream Blog:-

AS BEFORE: Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

Some photos were added (after the fact) to the original news story from the Roku Stream Blog but, since I took my own (at the time of the update) I thought I'd share them with you here:-

I also shared an annotated version of the above image, when I first shared the photo via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels for this blog. Here it is again, in case you missed it:-

The more observant among you may also have spotted that some subtle changes have been made to the Roku menu highlight box which indicates the currently selected menu item. For what it's worth, I do think this makes for a much "cleaner" look than the former "shaded" highlight box although your own opinions on this may vary! ;-) Anyway, once you navigate (click) through the "My Feed" menu, you will see that both the "Movies" and "TV Shows" sections (currently) offer a selection of 80 items "You might like..." from which you can browse, find, watch and/or follow the recommended content that already is or (hopefully) soon will be available on your Roku streaming media player:-

When you click on an item, you are presented with various options for watching the content (where available) and, if it's not yet on any channel, you can choose to "follow" that item (as with the original "Movies Coming Soon" section) and receive notifications as to availability & pricing, etc.

***********************************************

Somewhat less "obvious" changes to the Roku end-user menu were applied to the 'Settings' menu with the update to Roku OS 7.1.0 and, in my opinion, the most significant (read "useful") of these was the addition of some basic HDMI-CEC functionality, through what Roku refers to as a feature called "1-touch play" that can be found in a new 'Settings' category to "Control other devices" and, once again, I shared my own photos via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels for this blog. As with the photo(s) above, I'll also share them here, for those of you who may have missed them:-

If you navigate the 'Settings' menu to get to the "System" options, you will see the new category from where you can "Control other devices" and (again) it's a simple case of navigating through using the directional "Arrowhead" buttons on your Roku remote to highlight and select that item:-

Doing so will reveal the "1-touch play" option which is DISABLED BY DEFAULT but, to enable it, you simply highlight and select it, as shown in the photograph below:-

PLEASE NOTE:- That this setting will only be of use to those with HDMI-connected devices so, if you have an older model (e.g. 'Roku 2 XS', 'Roku 1', etc.) you will need to use the 'HDMI' output and NOT the 'AV Out' option on your Roku device to take advantage of this feature. The "sink device" means the AV equipment that your Roku is connected to. In most cases, this will mean a television that has HDMI capabilities... however, for some, it could be a home theatre amplifier / receiver or even a projector. In any event, that "sink device" must also support HDMI-CEC to use this function.

In any event, now that Roku has reversed the roll-out of this software update (at least in the UK) the details above can (for the time being) only be used for informational purposes by UK Roku users. If, however, you are in North America (i.e. the USA, Canada or Mexico) - and are therefore more likely to have access to this new Roku Software Version before we do - then it may come in handy! ;-)

Before you get too excited though, it only allows you to switch the "Source" or "Input" on your TV via any button press of the Roku remote. This is for situations where, for example, you were previously watching content from another source connected to your TV and have decided you now want to watch something else on TV, via your Roku device. With "1-touch play" enabled, you can just press a button on your Roku remote and it will automatically switch your TV (or other "sink device" to which your Roku is connected) to the correct input for viewing content through your Roku streaming media player. For the record... I did, in the 24 hours that I had access to Roku OS 7.1.0, manage to enable and test this function on my UK Roku devices and in all cases it worked perfectly. So, assuming Roku does extend Roku OS 7.1.0 to users in the UK on a more permanent basis, you can look forward to no longer needing your TV remote on hand for switching source inputs! :-)

One or two other "enhancements" to the 'Settings' menu in Roku OS 7.1.0 that I noticed were firstly how the system information for "Uptime", i.e. the period of time your Roku device has been powered "ON", has been moved from the "Secret Screen" to the "About" section. Secondly, an option for you to perform a "Network connection reset" - applicable to both 'Wired' and 'Wireless' connections - was added to the "Advanced system settings" category. Of course there may have been other tweaks made for this software update but, given the limited time for which I had access to it, that's about all I could find which stood out to me as being different from previous versions. That said, if you happened to spot anything else that I may have missed, please feel free to leave a comment below and share your findings with other readers of this blog! ;-)

Meanwhile, back to the main purpose of this 'Weekly RoundUp' post... which is to reveal to you all of the LATEST ADDITIONS to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store. So, here they are:-

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #162

$

Hi, everyone !!

Firstly, for anyone who read my previous "Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #161" post from last week, I would like to point out that the latest Roku software update to "Version 7.1.0" has since been rolled-out (again) to Roku devices in the UK! :-) So... everything I mentioned (previously) by way of a "preview" for UK Roku users can now be considered as an "overview" of the features found in the current software version / build for Roku UK devices - in other words, we now have the luxury of "1-touch play" (i.e. HDMI source / input switching) via the Roku remote... FOR REAL! ;-)

Meanwhile, the BIG NEWS this week came - IN THIS ANNOUNCEMENT - by 'Mike Duin' via the "Official" Roku Stream Blog, that 'NowTV' has (finally) been added as a "Search Partner" in the UK. For those Roku UK users (including myself) who have been calling for this ever since Roku "Search" was first announced for the UK by Roku CEO Anthony Wood - VIA THIS POST - this will come as a HUGE RELIEF and is definitely something that was LONG OVERDUE in terms of improving the usefulness of the Roku "Search" feature on UK Roku devices. Having said that, it's nowhere near as overdue as the arrival of "initial" Roku 'Search Partner' - Popcornflix - whom we were led to believe would be integral to this feature (in the UK) from launch! Exactly how much longer we are to be expected to wait for search results from 'Popcornflix' to be included in Roku "Search" for the UK is, quite frankly, anybody's guess but (until they do) at least we now have results from five services for Roku streaming media players in the UK, as evidenced in the following screenshot from Roku:-

HINT: Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

Moving on... to the (no less) important business of listing ALL NEW ADDITIONS to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store, you will soon discover that we have been treated to another bumper crop of channel releases during the past seven days. As has (often) been the case in recent weeks and months, not all of the channels get published in time (by Roku) to meet the weekly deadline for 'Roku Guide' reviews to be added for them. Consequently there are (once again) several "missing" links to reviews of certain channels that form part of this list. Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku website. That said, the majority of the text from those web store descriptions can also be found within the individual channel descriptions from the built-in "Channel Store" (accessed via "Streaming Channels" from the main menu) on all Roku devices and, together with the associated screenshots (where available), should give you a pretty good indication of what those channels are about. Hopefully Roku will (one day) wake-up to the fact that improving the experience for users in "other" Roku "regions" is just as important as for the U.S. and denying access to the Roku website does not help the end-user experience for those of us (outside the USA) who wish to browse the web channel store. Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' and, ignoring the "missing" links for now, here is what we have for you so far this week:-

MANDARIN TV......................................................................COST: FREE [Roku Guide Review]

***FILED UNDER: "INTERNATIONAL" in Roku UK Channel Store WHEN RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That this 'Mandarin TV' channel appears to be a rebranded version of an earlier release, known as the 'YOYO DRAMA' channel, whereby the channel name (together with the associated channel icon) and even the name of the developer credited with making it have all been changed for this "new look" version. My assumption for this is based on the fact that the unique number attributed to each new Roku channel (and featured in the web channel store URL for each and every "public" channel) is the same for 'Mandarin TV' (see link above) as it was for the previous incarnation as 'YOYO DRAMA' featured in my 'Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #159' a few weeks ago. As you can see, both links include ".../details/85247/..." but you will find that there is now no 'YOYO DRAMA' to be found in the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store, where now only the 'Mandarin TV' channel exists with that unique number now applied to the web channel store URL for the "rebranded" or "new look" version.

ALSO:- While there is a published 'Roku Guide' review for the "YOYO DRAMA" channel - HERE - this "rebranded" version appears to have escaped their notice (for the time being) so, unfortunately, there is (currently) no active link to an 'Roku Guide' review specific to 'Mandarin TV' and, therefore, I would suggest anyone interested in finding out more about this "new look" channel should simply install it (especially since it's FREE-TO-ADD and FREE-TO-VIEW on Roku devices) and find out for themselves. Other than that, you could always read the previously published 'Roku Guide' review for the 'YOYO DRAMA' channel (see link above) which, in so far as I can tell, remains reasonably accurate in terms of being an overview for 'Mandarin TV' as it did for 'YOYO DRAMA' before it! ;-)

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #164

$

Hi, everyone !!

Just like this time one week ago... there hasn't been much, in terms of Roku-related news, during the past seven days - ever since my last 'Weekly RoundUp' post was published - but, thankfully, we have (again) been blessed with a bumper crop of new channel additions to occupy our time. Having said that, there was one particular channel (which will appeal to fans of classic horror / cult films) that - whilst published via the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website - was (sadly) not made available via the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store. The channel, to which I'm referring, is:-

RAPID HEART TV.................................................................COST: FREE [Roku Guide Review]

As with other Roku channels that are (initially) unavailable to UK Roku users, I reached-out to the creative mind behind this channel... cult filmmaker, producer and director of more than one hundred genre films over the past thirty years - David DeCoteau [Twitter Feed: @DavidDeCoteau] - to ask if his 'RapidHeartTV' channel for Roku devices could be extended to UK users of the streaming media player(s). Although I have yet to receive 100% confirmation, I'm pleased to say that David did "like" my suggestion and took note of my pointers for editing the Roku channel to make it available here.

Should the necessary changes be implemented, you can expect to see the 'RapidHeartTV' channel feature in a future 'Weekly RoundUp' post on this blog. Until then, in addition to the information contained in the 'Roku Guide' review (see link above), those interested in learning more about the channel should visit the official website - VIA THIS LINK - from where more precise details, as to the type of content on offer, can be found. Meanwhile... thanks to an official 'YouTube' channel from the folks behind 'RapidHeartTV' - FOUND HERE - anyone (including those of us from the UK) can sample the videos on offer by searching 'YouTube' on Roku devices for "Rapid Heart TV" and simply playback any content, in that way, until such a time as we (hopefully) do get this channel in the UK. For those who'd like to communicate with 'RapidHeartTV' via social media, there is also an "Official" Twitter Feed for the channel. So, please message: @RAPIDHEARTtv with any enquiries. Thanks! :-)

There were two other new Roku channels released during the last seven days which did not feature in the "New" category of the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store... but, unlike 'RapidHeartTV', were made available to UK Roku users via the "Themes" genre. You will find them featured below (at the end of the current list of channels) but, since new Roku themes don't come along too often (especially here in the UK) and are therefore (moderately) newsworthy, here's a couple of screenshots for you:-

WHEELS ON FIRE THEME - PHOTO CREDIT: Roku Web Channel Store (USA)

DIRT RIDER THEME - PHOTO CREDIT: Roku Web Channel Store (USA)

HINT:- Please CLICK on the above images TO ENLARGE them for easier viewing !!

Unfortunately, the fact that these new themes were not included in the "New" category of the Roku channel store in the USA (or, indeed, anyregion) has meant that they could easily have been missed. This was (presumably) the case with the folks at 'Roku Guide' who have yet to publish a review for either of the above new Roku themes. Were it not for the fact that I consistently double-check the figures for each channel store genre (or, "category", if you prefer) from each week to the next, they would (most likely) have gone unnoticed by me, too. However, since changes to the total number of available themes are not that commonplace, a jump of two in the total was easy to spot! ;-) The only down side is that (for now, at least) there are no active links to 'Roku Guide' reviews for either theme.

Needless to say, you can expect the "missing" reviews to be added to this post once they do become available. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that these channels are already available to Roku owners in the USA (as evidenced by their inclusion under "Themes" in the Roku web channel store) and readers of this blog from the United States can follow the links provided below (and to the left of) these, plus each and every other channel icon listed here... to view their respective channel descriptions until such time as the reviews are published by 'Roku Guide'. Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website. Hopefully Roku will (one day) wake-up to the fact that improving the experience for users in "other" Roku "regions" is just as important as it is for those who buy & use their products in the U.S. and denying access to the Roku website does not help the end-user experience for those of us (outside the USA) who wish to browse the web channel store. Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is regularly summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts and so, ignoring the "missing" links for now, here is what we have for you so far this week:-

Those readers who are located in the USA - or, who have means of "appearing to be" from that region - can, at least, access the web channel store description via the one link I have included above... which is below (and to the left of) the channel icon that features in the built-in channel store on all Roku streaming media players. For the benefit of those Roku users from the UK (or, indeed, elsewhere) who (for whatever reason) are unable to use the above link, here is a screenshot of the description from the web channel store:-

HINT:- Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

That pretty much sums it up, really... since the included link (on the website) to "Read more" doesn't actually provide any additional text than can (already) be seen from this screenshot. Other than the image provided earlier in this post, the only extra detail for this "channel" or "theme" comes courtesy of two more screenshots which I'll (also) include here for those unable to access the Roku website:-

Until such a time as an 'Roku Guide' review is published, this is all the information that I am able to provide for the 'WheelsOnFire' theme. Having said that, once the details for any such review have been made known to me, I will (as I've said previously) add the "missing" link to this post! ;-)

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #165

Hi, everyone !!

As was the case two weeks ago... there hasn't been much, in terms of Roku-related news, during the past seven days - since my last 'Weekly RoundUp' post was published - but, thankfully, we have still been blessed with an above-average crop of new channel additions to occupy our time. You will notice, as you read through the list, that some of these channels did not get a 'Roku Guide' review published. For two of them, the (most likely) reason for this is that they were not actually added to the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store until after the current crop of 'Roku Guide' reviews were published. There were, however, two other new Roku channels released during the last seven days which did not feature in the "New" category of the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store... instead, they were made available to UK Roku users via the "Film & TV" plus "Special Interest" genres. You will find them all featured below and they can be easily identified by the absence of "active" links to their corresponding 'Roku Guide' reviews.

Needless to say, you can expect the "missing" reviews to be added to this post once they do become available. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that these channels are already available to Roku owners in the USA (as evidenced by their inclusion in the Roku web channel store) and readers of this blog from the United States can follow the links provided below (and to the left of) these, plus each and every other channel icon listed here... to view their respective channel descriptions, until such time as the reviews are published by 'Roku Guide'.

Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website.

Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is regularly summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts and so, ignoring the "missing" links for now, here is what we have so far:-

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #166

Hi, everyone !!

As was the case last week... there hasn't been much, in terms of Roku-related news, during the past seven days - since my last 'Weekly RoundUp' post was published - but, thankfully, we have again been blessed with an above-average crop of new channel additions to occupy our time. You will notice, at the end of this list, there is one channel that did not get a 'Roku Guide' review published. The (most likely) reason for this is that, being more of a rebranding / facelift exercise, it was not actually added to the "New" category of the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store and, instead, was made available solely via the "Lifestyle" genre. Consequently, it was missed by the folks over at 'Roku Guide' and there is (currently) no "active" link to a corresponding 'Roku Guide' review.

Needless to say, you can expect the "missing" review to be added to this post once it does become available. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that this channel is already available to Roku owners in the USA (as evidenced by it's inclusion in the Roku web channel store) and readers of this blog from the United States can follow the link provided below (and to the left of) this, plus each and every other channel icon listed here, to view the respective channel description... until such a time as the review for "Fascination TV" gets published via the 'Roku Guide' website.

Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website. My advice to any UK-based readers of this blog is to ignore the links below (and to the left of) each channel icon shown below and (instead) rely on the link to the right (below each channel icon) which (where available) will redirect you to an 'Roku Guide' review for additional details on each channel.

Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is regularly summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts. PLEASE NOTE:- That this 'Fascination TV' channel appears to be a rebranded version of an earlier release, known as the 'FNTV' channel, whereby the channel name (together with the associated channel icon) and various other aspects of the channel have all been changed for this "new look" version. My assumption for this is based on the fact that the unique number attributed to each new Roku channel (and featured in the web channel store URL for each and every "public" channel) is the same for 'Fascination TV' (see link above) as it was for the previous incarnation as 'FNTV' which, while featured in the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store, was not available to UK Roku users. Both links include ".../details/82005/..." but you will find that there is now no 'FNTV' to be found in the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store, where now only the 'Fascination TV' channel exists with that unique number applied to the web channel store URL for the "rebranded" or "new look" version.

ALSO:- While there is a published 'Roku Guide' review for the "FNTV" channel - HERE - this "rebranded" version appears to have escaped their notice (as mentioned above) so, unfortunately, there is (currently) no active link to an 'Roku Guide' review specific to 'Fascination TV' and I would (therefore) suggest anyone interested in finding out more about this "new look" channel should simply install it (especially since it's FREE-TO-ADD on Roku devices) and find out for themselves. Other than that, you could always read the previously published 'Roku Guide' review for the 'FNTV' channel (see link above) which, in so far as I can tell, remains reasonably accurate in terms of being an overview for 'Fascination TV' as it did for 'FNTV' before it! ;-)

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #167

Hi, everyone !!

Another "Streaming Day" has come and gone during the last week, with Friday 20th May 2016 being the eighth anniversary of the day that the first Roku media player was launched (in the USA) with the initial purpose of streaming "Netflix" content to American televisions. Of course... it's barely more than four years since Roku devices (officially) found their way into retail outlets, here in the UK, but (even so) we've still come a long way from the forty channels that were originally available to UK Roku users when early-adopters got their first look at the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store. Since then, there have been MORE THAN 2,500+ CHANNELS ADDED and, I'm happy to report that, this week has seen the number of apps available via the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store on 'Roku 3' devices reach the astounding total of 2,748 channels - all of which are listed on this blog! :-)

Compare that with the vastly inferior sum of only fifty-three apps available to owners of 'NowTV' devices which (let's not forget) started-out with fifty channels at launch (in July 2013) and you begin to understand why 'NowTV' removed "with more being added all the time" from the text promoting their channel highlights on the 'NowTV' website. With all of the 'NowTV' content being available on UK Roku devices, PLUS the choice of streaming additional content from EITHER 'Netflix UK' OR 'Amazon Video UK' AND WITH 2,600+ EXTRA CHANNELS TO CHOOSE FROM... it's a wonder anybody still opts for the "Roku Powered" devices from 'NowTV' over own-brand products by Roku here in the UK... especially when the former are so severely restricted and the latter offer more and more content (almost) every week. Still, you pay your money and take your choice... it's just that, with genuine UK Roku-branded devices, the choice is far wider than you'll get from 'NowTV'! ;-)

Other than that, as has been the case for the past few weeks... there hasn't been much, in terms of Roku-related news, during the past seven days - since my last 'Weekly RoundUp' post was published - but, thankfully, we have once more been blessed with an above-average crop of new channel additions to occupy our time. Again, you will notice there are a couple of channels which did not get a published 'Roku Guide' review. In one instance, the (most likely) reason for this is that it was not actually added to the "New" category of the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store and, instead, was made available solely via the "Web Video" genre. Consequently, it was missed by the folks over at 'Roku Guide' and there is (currently) no "active" link to a corresponding 'Roku Guide' review. As for the other channel (which you will find at the very end of this list) the "missing" link is entirely down to the fact that it's description was not added to the "Official" Roku USA Channel Store until after the publishing deadline to be eligible for an 'Roku Guide' review (in the current week) had passed.

Needless to say, you can expect the "missing" reviews to be added to this post once they do become available. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that these channels are already available to Roku owners in the USA (as evidenced by their inclusion in the Roku web channel store) and readers of this blog from the United States can follow the links provided below (and to the left of) these, plus each and every other channel icon listed here, to view their respective channel descriptions... until such a time as the anticipated reviews do get published via the 'Roku Guide' website.

Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website. My advice to any UK-based readers of this blog is to ignore the links below (and to the left of) each channel icon shown below and (instead) rely on the link to the right (below each channel icon) which (where available) will redirect you to an 'Roku Guide' review for additional details on each channel.

Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is regularly summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts. Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #168

Hi, everyone !!

While we've been enjoying bumper crops of new Roku channels every week throughout the past six weeks, the output during the last seven days has dropped below twenty channels for only the fifth time this year. That said, we have still managed to remain above the weekly average for the entire year during 2015 (which happened to be sixteen, in case you were wondering) and, as always, there is a pretty varied mixture of content on offer from these latest additions to the "Official" Roku UK Channel Store - as featured (to a greater or lesser extent) on all Roku streaming media players here in the United Kingdom - which, let's face it, is never a bad position to be in! :-)

If you happen to follow the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels to this blog, then you will have seen me make reference to 'BT Sport' in connection with Roku UK devices. Now, while there is still no mention of an "Official" Roku channel on the horizon from 'BT Sport', this weekend will see the UEFA Champions League Final made available in several FREE-TO-VIEW formats in an attempt to promote 'BT Sport' to a wider audience than their existing subscriber base. Luckily for UK Roku users... one of the platforms 'BT Sport' has chosen for this marketing exercise is 'YouTube' which, as we all know, happens to be one of the 2,700+ channels available on Roku UK devices. So, thanks to 'BT Sport Football' providing a FULL LIVE STREAM of the UEFA Champions League Final via the 'BT Sport' channel on 'YouTube', UK Roku users will be able to view the game (being broadcast by 'BT Sport Europe' at the same time) and get to watch 'BT Sport' streaming on Roku - albeit for a very short period of time. In order to WATCH THE ENTIRE MATCH LIVE ON ROKU you will need to visit the "Official" BT Sport channel on YouTube - VIA THIS LINK - which will begin streaming the event from 6pm BST tonight (Saturday 28th May 2016) with the kick-off taking place at 7.45pm BST and, if enough Roku / NowTV Box users stream the game via 'YouTube' it will show that there is a big demand for streaming 'BT Sport' over and above using 'Airplay' via Apple TV devices! ;-)

If you have any problems streaming via 'YouTube', you can view the other options which 'BT Sport' has provided for watching the UEFA Champions League Final - IN THIS POST - but, if possible, I suggest watching via 'YouTube' on UK Roku devices or NowTV Box to (hopefully) make a better case for an Roku channel for 'BT Sport' in the near future - COME ON 'BT', YOU CAN DO IT! :-) Anyway, back to the 'Weekly RoundUp' of new channels added to UK Roku devices...

Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website. My advice to any UK-based readers of this blog is to ignore the links below (and to the left of) each channel icon shown below and (instead) rely on the link to the right (below each channel icon) which will redirect you to an 'Roku Guide' review for additional details on each channel.

Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is regularly summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts. So, without further ado, here is what we have this week:-

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #169

Hi, everyone !!

As was the case last week... there hasn't been much, in terms of Roku-related news, during the past seven days - since my last 'Weekly RoundUp' post was published - but, thankfully, we have again been blessed with an above-average crop of new channel additions to occupy our time. You will however notice, when you browse through the current list, that there are seven channels for which no 'Roku Guide' review was published. In the case of "Chinese Movie" at the very end of the list... the (most likely) reason for this is that, being more of a rebranding / facelift exercise, it was missed by the folks at 'Roku Guide' and consequently there is (currently) no "active" link to a corresponding review. As for the five channels immediately prior to that, their channel descriptions were only added to the Roku (USA) Web Channel Store after the current crop of 'Roku Guide' reviews were published. They are mentioned here, purely and simply because the 'Weekly RoundUp' articles on this blog are posted a day later... to ensure that anything released late on Friday still gets added in the current week and is not delayed until the next, as with 'Roku Guide'. Speaking of which, the only other channel not to get an 'Roku Guide' review published this week comes right at the very top of my list... and, for some reason, the "Vermont Television Network" channel did not feature in the "New" category of the Roku (USA) Web Channel Store at all. Instead, details only came to light via the channel description found in the "Special Interest" genre, which is (no doubt) why it was missed by 'Roku Guide' and, like the other half dozen channels, has no published review for me to link to at this time.

Needless to say, you can expect the "missing" reviews to be added to this post once they do become available. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that these channels are already available to Roku owners in the USA (as evidenced by their inclusion in the Roku web channel store) and readers of this blog from the United States can follow the links provided below (and to the left of) these, plus each and every other channel icon listed here, to view their respective channel descriptions... until such a time as the "missing" reviews do get published via the 'Roku Guide' website.

Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website. My advice to any UK-based readers of this blog is to ignore the links below (and to the left of) each channel icon shown below and (instead) rely on the link to the right (below each channel icon) which will redirect you to an 'Roku Guide' review for additional details on each channel. As it stands, the links below (and to the left of) each channel icon are (currently) only of use to readers of this blog from the USA who, on clicking those links, will be redirected to the respective channel description from the Roku Web Channel Store. This means Roku users from the other "supported" regions of the world (i.e. Ireland, Canada, France and Mexico) are, like those of us in the UK, unable to browse the Roku Web Channel Store - which for now remains an exclusive privilege of Roku users in the USA. :-(

Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is regularly summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts. So, without further ado, here is what we have this week:-

CHINESE MOVIE...........................................COST: £7.49 (MONTHLY) [Roku Guide Review]

***FILED UNDER: "FILM & TV" in Roku UK Channel Store WHEN FIRST RELEASED***

PLEASE NOTE:- That 'Chinese Movie' appears to be a rebranded version of an earlier release, known as 'Chinese Variety', whereby the channel name (together with the associated channel icon) and various other aspects of the channel have all been changed for this "new look" version. My assumption for this is based on the fact that the unique number attributed to each new Roku channel (and featured in the web channel store URL for every "public" channel) happens to be the same for 'Chinese Movie' (see link above) as it was for the previous incarnation as 'Chinese Variety' which was featured in my 'Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #166' from a few weeks back. Both of the links include ".../details/89807/..." but you will find that there is now no 'Chinese Variety' to be found in the "Official" Roku Channel Store, where now only the 'Chinese Movie' channel exists with that unique number applied to the web channel store URL for the "rebranded" or "new look" version.

ALSO:- While there is a published 'Roku Guide' review for the 'Chinese Variety' channel - HERE - this "rebranded" version appears to have escaped their notice (as mentioned above) so, unfortunately, there is (currently) no active link to an 'Roku Guide' review specific to the 'Chinese Movie' channel and I would (therefore) suggest anyone interested in finding out more about this "new look" channel should (instead) read the previously published 'Roku Guide' review for the 'Chinese Variety' channel (see link above) which, in so far as I can tell, remains reasonably accurate in terms of being an overview for this 'Chinese Movie' channel as it did for 'Chinese Variety' before it! ;-)

How To WATCH UEFA EURO 2016 LIVE On Roku Players and NowTV Boxes via Live Streaming !!!

$

Hi, everyone !!

Unless you've deliberately avoided watching (or streaming) any television & reading any newspapers or magazines in the last couple of weeks, not to mention visiting relevant websites and/or social media pages, then you will doubtless be aware that the 2016 UEFA European Championships are about to begin on Friday 10th June. Much like the FIFA World Cup... this tournament only comes around every four years and, despite owning Roku devices at the time, I had not yet conceived of (or begun publishing) this UK Roku blog when Euro 2012 was in full swing. So, as surprising as it may seem, this is my first opportunity to post an article on how and where to WATCH EVERY MATCH of the UEFA European Championships 2016 (aka "Euro 2016" or even, "The Euros", if you prefer) via the oh-so modern streaming media players which allow you to LIVE STREAM EVERY GAME via either Roku and/or NowTV devices to stay on top of all the footballing action as it happens! :-)

The current UEFA Euro 2016 tournament runs for an entire month, between 10th June and 10th July, and will see two-time defending champions, Spain, contest the title as one of twenty-four teams taking part - FOOTBALL TRIVIA: This will be the first time that the European Championships have featured twenty-four teams in the final stages, with only sixteen involved in the years prior to this expansion!

Anyway, if you happen to be a supporter of one of the teams involved in Euro 2016 and would like to follow their progress (or not) throughout the competition, the GOOD NEWS is that it is going to be very easy to do via either Roku or NowTV devices. The reason for this is both brands of streaming media player(s) provide access to the following Roku channels in their featured line-up:-

BBC iPlayer can be found under "Film & TV" in the built-in Roku Channel Store that features on all UK Roku devices, or the built-in 'App Store' found on NowTV Boxes, although it's probably more easy to add it via the "Most Popular" genre in both cases.

If preferable, for UK Roku users, there is also the added alternative of the "Featured" channels category which might save you a "click" or two on your remote but, either way, it's hard to miss this channel should you need to add it to your Roku / NowTV device(s).

ITV Hub is also located under "Film & TV" in the built-in Roku Channel Store that features on all UK Roku devices, as well as the built-in 'App Store' on NowTV Boxes, although (again) it's probably easier to add it via the "Most Popular" genre in either case.

As with 'BBC iPlayer', for Roku users, there is also the alternative of the "Featured" channels category which might save a "click" or two on your remote but, once again, it's hard to miss 'ITV Hub' should you need to add it to your UK Roku-powered device(s).

Having installed both of the above channels, if you hadn't already done so prior to reading this post, the most important thing to know is WHEN your team is playing and ON WHICH CHANNEL you can expect to LIVE STREAM any given match via your Roku and/or NowTV devices. To that end, I have summarised the upcoming match fixtures (in date order) together with the relevant channel info so you can easily find which games are streaming on any given day and at what time:-

IMPORTANT NOTICE:- The times quoted for the above football matches are the individual times scheduled for each game to kick-off and, as always, are subject to change (for various reasons) so please use this as a GUIDE ONLY reference to the 2016 UEFA European Championship fixtures.

IN ADDITION:- It's (probably) worth mentioning ALL TIMES QUOTED ARE BST (GMT+1) so, if you happen to be in a different country, you will need to adjust the kick-off times shown in this post to be relevant to your particular timezone. For USA readers, this means that a kick-off time shown here as "2pm" will be equivalent to "9am" Eastern and "6am" Pacific. Likewise, matches which start at "5pm" in the UK will begin at "12pm" (i.e. noon / midday) Eastern and "9am" Pacific. Another common time for games to begin is "8pm" in the UK, which equates to "3pm" Eastern for those on the east coast in the U.S. and "12pm" (i.e. noon / midday) Pacific for those on the west coast. If you're on Central or Mountain time, you can (hopefully) work out your own times from there! ;-) Speaking of those in other timezones, I've included details of a private channel (towards the end of this post) which should allow you to watch live streams of all the matches (as detailed above & below) for the entire 2016 UEFA European Championships. It might also come in handy for UK users of both Roku and NowTV devices if there's any problems with either of the UK CatchUpTV channels (e.g. if their streams are "over-subscribed" and, therefore, unwatchable) and you need an alternative. With this app installed as a "backup" ahead of time, you should have no worries over missing any of the action. The other good thing is that it includes a basic "Now/Next" EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) so, if you do happen to need it, you can get instant confirmation of "what's on"... wherever you are in the world!

LASTLY:- It is also worth noting LIVE COVERAGE BEGINS SOONER in almost all cases, which means that programming could start anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour ahead of the kick-off in the case of each & every match listed in this post. So, if you want to catch the build-up to any of the games from this tournament... BE SURE TO TUNE-IN EARLIER THAN TIMES SHOWN !!!!!! ;-)

************************************************

Once the above set of fixtures, collectively known as the "Group Stage", have been completed... the next phase of the 'Euro 2016' championships is the "Round of 16", with the eight matches all being played from Saturday 25th June to Monday 27th June (inclusive) as follows:-

MATCH 1: Runner-Up Group A v Runner-Up C (KICK-OFF: 2pm on 25th June in St-Etienne)

MATCH 2: Winner D v Third-Place Group B or E or F (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 25th June in Lens)

MATCH 3: Winner B v Third-Place Group A or C or D (KICK-OFF: 5pm on 25th June in Paris)

MATCH 4: Winner Group F v Runner-Up Group E (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 26th June in Toulouse)

MATCH 5: Winner C v Third-Place Group A or B or F (KICK-OFF: 5pm on 26th June in Lille)

MATCH 6: Winner A v Third-Place Group C or D or E (KICK-OFF: 2pm on 26th June in Lyon)

MATCH 7: Winner Group E v Runner-Up Group D (KICK-OFF: 5pm on 27th June in St-Denis)

MATCH 8: Runner-Up Group B v Runner-Up Group F (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 27th June in Nice)

PLEASE NOTE:- That 'MATCH' number(s) quoted DOES NOT INDICATE ORDER OF PLAY for the football matches outlined above, so footie fans should PAY ATTENTION TO KICK-OFF TIMES as well as the dates shown TO AVOID MISSING ANY GAMES !!!!!! ;-) :-)

ALSO:- Precise channel details (of 'BBC' and 'ITV' match coverage) for the "Round of 16" were not known at the time of publishing. However, I will endeavour to update this article with the relevant information as the tournament progresses and the details become known to me. Apologies for any inconvenience that may be caused by their absence in the meantime! ;-)

************************************************

After the "Round of 16" matches (outlined above) the UEFA European Championship 2016 reaches the "Quarter Finals" stage, with the ties all set to take place from Friday 30th June to Monday 3rd July (inclusive), where the fixtures between all "Round of 16" winners are arranged as follows:-

QF1: Winner Match 1 v Winner Match 2 (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 30th June in Marseille)

QF2: Winner Match 3 v Winner Match 4 (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 1st July in Lille)

QF3: Winner Match 5 v Winner Match 6 (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 2nd July in Bordeaux)

QF4: Winner Match 7 v Winner Match 8 (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 3rd July in St-Denis)

PLEASE NOTE:- That, as with the "Round of 16" fixtures (outlined above), precise channel details (of 'BBC' and 'ITV' match coverage) for the "Quarter Finals" of Euro 2016 were not known to me at the time of publishing this post. Again, I shall endeavour to update this article with the relevant info as the tournament progresses and the details become available. As before, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience that may have been caused by their absence in the meantime! ;-)

With the 2016 UEFA European Championships entering it's "final" week (if you'll pardon the pun) the next phase of the tournament is the "Semi-Finals", for which the matches are set to take place on Thursday 6th July and Friday 7th July, between the 4 winners from the "Quarter Finals" as shown:-

SF1: Winner QF1 v Winner QF2 (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 6th July in Lyon)

SF2: Winner QF3 v Winner QF4 (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 6th July in Marseille)

AGAIN, PLEASE NOTE:- That, as with both the "Quarter Finals" and the "Round of 16" fixtures (outlined previously), channel details (of 'BBC' and 'ITV' match coverage) for the "Semi-Finals" of Euro 2016 were not known to me at the time of publishing this post. As before, I shall endeavour to update this article with the relevant information as the tournament progresses and the details become available. Meanwhile, as with the other "missing" info, please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience that may have been caused by their absence!

All of which leads us rather nicely to the conclusion of this month-long festival of football on Roku... with the winners of the two "Semi-Finals" set to compete for the big prize on Monday 10th July, when the tournament final takes place to decide the overall winner of the UEFA Euro 2016 football championships, between:-

FINAL: Winner SF1 v Winner SF2 (KICK-OFF: 8pm on 10th July in St-Denis)

AS ABOVE, PLEASE NOTE:- That channel details (of 'BBC' and 'ITV' match coverage) for the "Final" of Euro 2016 were not known to me at the time of publishing this post. Again, I shall endeavour to update this article with the relevant information as the tournament progresses and the details become available. Meanwhile, as with any other "missing" info, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience that may have been caused by it's (hopefully) temporary absence! ;-)

Of course, if you're in a part of the world where 'BBC iPlayer' and/or 'ITV Hub' are not an option for you, there's plenty of coverage for the 2016 UEFA European Championships around the globe. For Roku users in the USA, there's a lot of matches being broadcast by 'ESPN' which means those of you with a subscription to 'Sling TV' should be well catered for. Elsewhere, the likes of RAI, SuperSport, BeIN Sports and loads of other TV channels worldwide will be showing the games from Euro 2016 too, so (one way or another) you should be able to watch and/or stream the matches you're interested in seeing from the tournament. Sadly, not all of them have a presence on the Roku platform... so, if you're plain out of options, or (say) having difficulty streaming via one of the UK CatchUpTV apps on Roku (or NowTV Box), then you might want to try the "unofficial" FilmOn private Roku channel by Ryan Cullen [Twitter Feed: @Artesea] which will also provide live streams of the televised games to users of Roku streaming media players and/or NowTV devices. Needless to say, it's far easier for Roku owners to add the channel, since it only requires you to login to your Roku account (online) and scroll down a bit to the "Manage Account" section, where you'll find a link to "Add a Channel" that will redirect you to another page on the Roku website where you can enter a code to add it as shown:-

HINT: Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

Once you're presented with the data-entry field, simply TYPE-IN CODE: ARTESEAFON and press the button below the text-entry box to add the channel to your Roku account. Once that's done, you should then see a pop-up window overlaid on your screen asking you to confirm that you wish to add 'FilmOn - Unofficial' to your Roku account, as per the screenshot below:-

AGAIN: Please CLICK on the above image TO ENLARGE IT for easier viewing !!

From there simply click the button, which says "Yes, Add Channel", and then you should see another message confirming that the channel was successfully added to your Roku account. After that, you can simply logout of your account and the channel will be installed on your Roku device(s) - TIP: If you don't see the channel icon for 'FilmOn - Unofficial' at the end of your list of installed channels, just go to Settings > System > System update > Check now on your Roku device and, once you see the on-screen message saying "Your Roku player software is up to date", simply press "OK" followed by the "Home" button on your Roku remote, to return to the main menu. From there... press the 'RIGHT' directional arrowhead key once, followed by a single press of the 'UP' directional arrowhead key, via your Roku remote and you should then see the 'FilmOn - Unofficial' private channel sitting at the end of your list of installed Roku channels! ;-) :-)

For NowTV Box owners, the inability to add Roku private channels via an online Roku account does make the process slightly more involved. That is because, in order to install 'FilmOn - Unofficial', you will need to sideload a ZIP file of the 'FilmOn - Unofficial' private Roku channel onto your NowTV Box. To do so... you will first need to download the most recent version 1.2.0 (1.1.7) of the ZIP file, which (as with previous versions) has been made available free - online - courtesy of the app developer, Ryan Cullen, via his Google Drive account. For the record, you can always find the latest version posted on Ryan's blog - via this link - which may come in handy if you are reading this after the fact! ;-) Anyway, once you have downloaded the ZIP file, you can then set about sideloading the (unopened) ZIP file of the 'FilmOn - Unofficial' private Roku channel onto your NowTV Box! :-)

Before I get too deep into the subject, rather than get into the whole process of side-loading apps onto NowTV devices in this post, I'll simply do as Ryan suggests on his blog... which is to refer you to this ONLINE TUTORIAL from 'Engadget' that covers the entire procedure from start to finish. That said, I should (perhaps) point-out that the article by 'Engadget' uses a ZIP file of the 'PLEX' app by way of example but, nevertheless, the process is the same for whichever app (i.e. Roku channel) you choose to sideload onto your NowTV Box. Just remember, you can only have one side-loaded app at a time in 'Developer Mode' on NowTV devices... so, if you already have 'PLEX' or 'Emby' or one of the other freely available ZIP files side-loaded onto your device, you will need to "Replace" that with the ZIP file of the 'FilmOn - Unofficial' channel if you want to use 'FilmOn - Unofficial' as a backup to (or, instead of) the UK CatchUp TV apps on your NowTV Box for streaming the UEFA European Championships. While we're on the subject... if you'd like the ability to add private Roku channels, without the need to side-load them one at a time via NowTV Boxes, I recommend upgrading to a genuine Roku-branded product rather than messing about with the lightweight 'Roku-Powered' streaming media players you get from NowTV! With 2,700+ extra Roku channels to choose from, over & above the 50 or so on NowTV devices, you won't regret the switch... especially as you can get both 'Netflix'& 'Amazon Video', as well as all 'NowTV' content, on original UK Roku products! ;-)

In any event, this article should prove useful (one way or another) to any Roku user - no matter which "region" you happen to be in - as well as to all owners of NowTV Box devices, who may wish to live stream the forthcoming football matches from the Euro 2016 tournament. Even so, if you have any questions or (perhaps) some thoughts and/or requests of your own on the subject, please feel free to leave a comment below... or else, via the companion Twitter Feed: @ukrokuchannels for this blog, and I will endeavour to help-out whenever I am able to do so ! :-)

For now, though...

That's all folks!

Roku UK Channel Store - Weekly RoundUp #170

Hi, everyone !!

As has been the case for the past few weeks... there hasn't been much Roku-specific news during the past seven days but, that said, there was one piece of Roku-related news that came our way on Thursday morning, thanks to a teaser from 'NowTV' - via their Twitter Feed - which proved to be somewhat intriguing. The tweet in question hinted at something in the pipeline, for later this month, and included an animated GIF... which can be summarised by the following series of screenshots:-

Other than that... we were advised "All will be revealed" on that date but little else was made known at this point. Of course, this led to much speculation (by way of reply) on Twitter although it remains to be seen if any of the thought & opinions put forward come to fruition. Whether part of this "news" will relate to 'Sky Online' (the European equivalent of the 'NowTV' service) being rebranded to bring everything under the umbrella of 'NowTV' is anyone's guess... but that hasn't stopped them coming! Of course, when the time comes, the "news" could still point to a date in the more distant future for the new 'NowTV' devices to be put on general sale but, whenever that may be, let's hope that some new Roku-branded (rather than Roku-Powered) product is not too far behind it! ;-) :-)

With little else, aside from the promise of future "news" from 'NowTV', it did (at least) afford me the time to publish "How To WATCH UEFA EURO 2016 LIVE On Roku Players and NowTV Boxes" to provide a one-stop source for Roku users to find out which Roku channels to use for live-streaming every match of the 2016 UEFA European Championships and detailing the kick-off times for each game, as well as providing details of a "backup" private channel that can be used under circumstances where (for one reason or another) you find yourself unable to watch via 'BBC iPlayer' or 'ITV Hub'. Thankfully, while I was researching & compiling my special feature for Euro 2016, there was plenty of activity from the collective Roku development community... meaning we  have (once again) been blessed with an above-average crop of new Roku channels being added to the channel store, as you will soon discover when you continue to read this post and see the list for yourself! :-)

Unfortunately, Roku UK users are still subject to restrictions (imposed by Roku) and (bizarrely) remain unable to access the channel descriptions in the web channel store on the Roku (USA) website. :-(

Anyway, what Roku doesn't want UK Roku users to see on their website (i.e. the list of new channels) is regularly summarised on this blog in my 'Weekly RoundUp' posts. So, without further ado, here is what we have this week:-
